Matcha tea is green tea that has been specially processed to become "tea powder" which is mixed into hot water rather than brewed like green tea. With brewed green tea, you pour boiling water over the leaves, steep for while and then dispose of the leaves. Matcha, on the other hand, mixes into the water leaving nothing for disposal.
The traditional method of matcha preparation uses a "chasen" or whisk which blends the powder into the water resulting in a green frothy tea. This aerates the mixture and enhances flavor compared to simply stirring with a spoon into the hot water
